OpenAI's new model is Terrifying + Runway's impressive new AI Video model

OpenAI's Claim Terrified Me

This week OpenAI released updated versions of its latest models o3 and o4 mini. They haven't fared well on AI leaderboards despite the claim that:

"Top scientists tell us that they produce legitimately good and useful novel Ideas"

Greg Brockman, President of OpenAI

That is a HUGE claim - one that, if true, could be world-changing.

Let me explain why. We know that AI can produce Phd-level research, we know it contains all the knowledge of the internet, and that it's essentially far more knowledgeable than any human could ever be.

They claim that AI is now creative, it can come up with novel solutions to problems. As a creative professional, that's terrifying. The implication is that it can do my job.

All that is missing is memory and AI would be able to far outperform any human - essentially, we'd have the foundations of AGI at that point.

So I thought this was worth putting to the test.

One thing I've found AI to be piss poor at is naming things. I occasionally use it as my creative partner and bounce ideas back and forth but its always been kind of fruitless (hence why this email is called AI Design Resources - I kind of hate that name)

I gave o3 a brief and some background details to come up with a brand name for an imaginary swimwear brand based out of Mexico. The name should be easily pronounceable in both English and Spanish.

And the results were...

Impressive!

Without instruction, it also went and checked existing competition and if URLS and social media accounts are available - this is a huge time saver.

It's one thing to come up with a name you love, then another to find the website is already taken.

And as for the names themselves, they're not bad - they match the vibe I instructed it to follow.

I'm kind of blown away - this requires some further experimentation - I'm going to go deep on this next week and come back to you.

I'm Entering Runway's Gen 48 AI Competition. Here's what I learnt about Runway's new Gen-4 model

video preview

Gen 48 is an AI short film competition where you have only 48 hrs to make a film on a given theme.

To be honest I, probably like you, had got bored of all the crappy AI films but I've always been interested in new tech and how it gives birth to new trends and artitic styles.

And with the recent upgrade in AI models' ability to create realistic film (Gen4, Kling 2.0, Firefly) I decided to put my money where my mouth is and see if I can create something interesting.

Like a new world that never would have existed without AI, something weird and surreal that wouldn't have been possible without AI, or at least not feasible given time and budget constraints.

The video above is my first exploration into whether AI can create consistent and coherent imagined worlds or just copy its training data.

By mashing images together and chaos prompting, I tried to create something unique rather than a clone of reality.

So What's New in Gen-4

You might remember the old camera control system, where you could control the camera movement with sliders:

Well, they are gone. Now you have a text prompt to rely on and a best practice for prompting. Runway recommends beginning with a basic prompt elements

"Adding one new element at a time will help you identify which additions improve your video, understand how different elements interact, and more effectively troubleshoot unexpected results."

Of course, I ignored that advice because, to be frank, it's pretty expensive—60 tokens for 5 seconds of video on the latest model.

$18 = 640 credits/ $1.68 a video

You're not gonna do much with 10 clips a month - fortunately, there's a turbo mode which is only 25 credits (and they gift you 300,000 credits if you signup for Gen 48).

In general I was impressed with the new version but don't expect miracles its still janky as fuck and you'll need to roll the dice multiple times to get something half decent.

However, it did handle surrealism well and the temporal consistency of objects has improved a lot.

If you want to join GEN 48 sign up here: https://runwayml.com/gen48

And I'll share whatever my team comes up with in 48 hrs after the event. I'm also going to be experimenting with style and idea for the week to try and get a head start. Follow me on socials.

30 DAY DOPAMINE DETOX PODCAST YOUTUBE Open AI's new 4o Image Generation is making me question the future of the creative industry In case you missed it, Open AI has released new image generation capabilities we haven't seen in one easy-to-use model before. It has a much better understanding of what it is being asked to do (prompt adherence) and the ability to edit images via text request. That doesn't sound exciting but frankly it is impressive and it opens up a lot of questions about the...

30 Day Dopamine Detox | PODCAST YOUTUBE What I learnt at a 5-day design retreat in Mexico Last week, I spent five days at a design retreat in Merida, Mexico, with some of the industry's most famous names. I didn´t know what to expect, but I knew it was going to be different. "This isn’t a conference. There’s no front row or back row—everyone is in the middle of the experience. No VIP sections because everyone here matters the same." The event opened with a blessing from a shaman and a laser...
